Start at TFS
Make sure you are at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), not Tenerife North Airport (TFN).

Find line 40
Aena lists the TFS bus stop in the terminal on floor 0, arrivals. Follow the bus signs there and board the service displayed for Los Cristianos and Estación Costa Adeje. After the last line 40, the night line 711 covers the same journey, and TITSA says it stops at TFS at the Departures terminal: go up to Departures for it.

Use an official boarding point
For travel toward Costa Adeje, board at TFS, Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje station. Do not depend on an intermediate pickup, which the route notes restrict.

Pickup caveat towards Costa Adeje
TITSA notes that in the Costa Adeje direction, intermediate stops are not used for pickup except when passengers are getting off. Board at TFS or confirm the stop rule for your direction.

Staying in Playa de las Américas
TITSA’s route descriptions for lines 40 and 711 name Los Cristianos and Estación Costa Adeje, not Playa de las Américas. Choose whichever of those two named points is closer to your hotel and plan the last stretch from there, rather than expecting a stop the route page does not list.
Los Cristianos is also the La Gomera ferry port
The La Gomera ferries leave from the port of Los Cristianos; WebTenerife says the Santa Cruz port handles the ferries mainly to Gran Canaria and mainland Spain. Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias both sail from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera and each gives the crossing as about 50 minutes. TITSA names Los Cristianos on line 40 but not the ferry terminal, so check the walk from your stop to the port before a sailing.

Landing late: the date changes, and bags take time
A late landing is often met by a small-hours 711. The date changes overnight, but the board keeps those trips at the end of the evening's tab, after the late ones: on a Friday-night landing, stay on Friday's tab and read on past the evening rows. Touchdown is not bus time: passport control and the baggage belt come first, so count from the moment you have your bags, plan on a later 711 than the first one after landing, and know the one after it too. The southbound 711 boards at Departures, not at the arrivals stop.

With children, a pushchair and suitcases
TITSA lets an unfolded pushchair ride only on a bus built for standing passengers and only when the space is free of wheelchairs; on a bus with steps you fold it and carry the child, and with no free space the child rides in your arms. Bags must stay within 100 × 60 × 25 by TITSA's page, which prints no unit, so ask before relying on a big case. Room on a given bus is never promised: on a short outing between flights, take an early 40 back that leaves a full bus's worth of margin, and do not assume the airport will keep your suitcases.

Not by that name: TITSA's routes for lines 40 and 711 name Los Cristianos and Estación Costa Adeje, not Playa de las Américas. Get off at whichever of the two is closer to your hotel and plan the last stretch from there.
