Santiago del Teide
Where Tenerife last erupted, above the west coast
Chinyero, above Santiago del Teide, is the volcano of the island’s most recent eruption, in 1909. The village itself sits at about 900 m among vines, almonds and figs, a thousand metres above its own coast at Puerto Santiago, and it is where lines 460 and 464 from Costa Adeje meet line 355 to Masca.

Get to know Santiago del Teide.
The municipality of Santiago del Teide runs from the coast at Puerto Santiago up to the Teide pine forest, and its village sits at about 900 metres. WebTenerife calls the Los Gigantes cliff, up to 600 metres high, the municipality’s icon, and the Chinyero volcano, in its special nature reserve, the site of Tenerife’s latest eruption, in 1909.
Why go
-
Tenerife’s latest eruption
Chinyero, in the special nature reserve of the same name, is the volcano of the island’s most recent eruption, in 1909, in the upper part of the municipality.
-
Pottery and almond blossom
The Cha Domitila pottery centre and ethnographic museum in Arguayo keeps the craft the valley lived on, and the SL-TF 60 trail from it to Santiago del Teide passes almond orchards and Montaña Bilma.
-
A door to Masca and to the cliffs
Line 355 continues from the village to Masca and Buenavista, and the municipality’s coast holds the Los Gigantes cliffs and the Blue Flag Playa de La Arena.
