Vilaflor
One of Spain’s highest villages, below Teide
Vilaflor de Chasna sits at about 1,400 m in pine forest a step from Teide, and has drawn visitors for its climate since the sixteenth century. Cobbled streets lead out to legendary pines and the trail to the Paisaje Lunar; line 482 climbs from Los Cristianos, and the Teide bus passes by.

Getting to Vilaflor
Line 342 from Costa Adeje to Teide National Park runs by way of Los Cristianos, Arona and Vilaflor; its stop lists name no stop called Vilaflor: by the village it stops at Santa Catalina, next to Vilaflor Centro on line 482’s list, and its one every-day table gives no time there. Line 482 runs between Vilaflor Centro and Los Cristianos, with a working-day table and a Saturday, Sunday and holiday table.

Before you settle in
Keep the way home in mind.
WebTenerife notes that bus frequencies here are lower than on the coast, especially at weekends. Line 482 times its Vilaflor Centro stop: open its table for your day and fix your return before you set out on a walk. Line 342 stops at Santa Catalina but its table gives no time there, so read the nearest timed stop (Los Cristianos on the way up, Parador on the way down) and allow a margin.

Get to know Vilaflor.
Vilaflor de Chasna sits in the highest part of the island, among pine forest and close to Teide; WebTenerife counts it among the highest municipalities in Spain. Its small houses and cobbled streets are worth the walk, the church of San Pedro Apóstol is one of its most important historic buildings, and the first Canarian saint, Santo Hermano Pedro, was born here in 1626.
Why go
-
Visitors since the sixteenth century
Botanists, scientists and convalescents came up the Camino Real de Chasna for the closeness of Teide and the climate, and stayed at the first hotel in the south of the island, the Hotel Vilaflor.
-
Pines of legend
Two Canary pines unique for their size stand around the village, among the trees WebTenerife calls legendary; the Pino Gordo is the best known.
-
The Paisaje Lunar at the end of a forest walk
The PR-TF 72 leaves the village through Canary pine forest and reaches, after about 6 km, a viewpoint over Los Escurriales, white volcanic ash eroded into shapes from another planet.
