Luggage on Tenerife's buses: TITSA's rules

Suitcases, hand luggage, bikes, pushchairs and pets on TITSA's buses, as the operator's passenger questions state them, and what they leave open.

Your bus, at a glance

Yes, you can take a suitcase on the bus from either airport. TITSA's passenger questions set the rules: a bag may come aboard only within 100 × 60 × 25, a figure the page prints without a unit, and it must not endanger or disturb other passengers. Hand luggage is yours to watch; for luggage in the hold the operator accepts a limited liability its page states. Bicycles, folding or not, go in the hold, and only folding ones ride inside a bus without one, in the wheelchair space and strapped in. An unfolded pushchair rides only on a bus built for standing passengers and only when the space is free of wheelchairs. Dogs and cats travel under conditions set by weight. TITSA publishes no charge for a bag, so this site prints none.

The practical part

The essentials

  1. Suitcases: the size TITSA prints

Bags may come aboard only within 100 × 60 × 25 by TITSA's page, which prints no unit, so ask before relying on a large case, and they must not endanger or disturb other passengers. Stow a case in the hold where the bus has one and keep the rest out of the aisle; room on a given bus is never promised, so with luggage plan to let a full one go and still be on time.

  2. Hand luggage: yours to watch

TITSA's page says the watch over hand luggage is the passenger's and that damage to it is the passenger's account, except where the operator's responsibility is proved; for luggage carried in the hold, its liability for loss or damage in an accident is limited to an amount its page states. Keep valuables on you, not in the hold.

  3. Bicycles

Folding and non-folding bicycles must travel in the hold. On a bus without a hold, only folding bicycles may ride inside, in the places set aside for wheelchairs, respecting the wheelchairs' priority and strapped with the belts; how many fit depends on the anchoring system. A full-size bike on a bus without a hold has no place by TITSA's own page.

  4. Pushchairs, and children in arms

An unfolded pushchair may ride only on a bus built for standing passengers and only if the space is not taken by a wheelchair; board low-floor buses by the second door. On a bus with steps, fold it, carry the child aboard and unfold it inside only if there is room, or put it in the hold; without a free space, the child stays in your arms for the whole ride.

Pets

Dogs and other domestic animals under ten kilograms travel in a carrier no larger than 60 × 35 × 35, one per person, with no limit on places. A dog over ten kilograms is admitted one per accessible bus with a wheelchair space, after wheelchairs, pushchairs, companion dogs and folding bicycles in priority, on a lead under fifty centimetres and muzzled; TITSA excludes certain weekday peak periods its page names and any time the bus is too full, and the owner answers for damage and papers. Assistance dogs travel beside the person they assist on the whole fleet, with accreditation.

At the airports, with bags

Line 40 and night line 711 at Tenerife South, lines 20 and 30 at Tenerife North and line 10 at TFS carry airport passengers every day, so a suitcase within TITSA's size is the normal load. At TFS the 711 boards at Departures, not at the arrivals stop. Count baggage reclaim before the bus you aim for, not from touchdown. The ten+ Day Travelcard is sold at the airport ticket machines if you want to avoid paying with a case in one hand.

What the operator does not say

No charge for a bag, no number of bags per passenger, no rule for surfboards or golf bags beyond the size limit, and no list of which buses have a hold. Where TITSA's page is silent this site is silent too: for anything oversized, ask the operator about the departure you plan rather than trust a forum, and treat the driver's decision on the day as final.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask

Are dogs allowed on Tenerife's buses?

Under ten kilograms, yes, in a carrier no larger than 60 × 35 × 35, one per person. Over ten kilograms, one per accessible bus, muzzled and on a short lead, outside the weekday peak periods TITSA names and never when the bus is full. Assistance dogs travel on the whole fleet beside their handler.

The other half of the plan

And the way back.

On the way home the same rules apply and the hold is loaded at the stop: be there early enough to stow a case before boarding, keep hand luggage with you, and with children or bags take a departure that leaves a full bus's worth of margin before a flight or a ferry.
