La Gomera from Tenerife by bus and ferry

The La Gomera ferry leaves Los Cristianos, a stop on line 40 and night line 711 from the airport and Costa Adeje. How bus and boat fit, and the catch.

Your bus, at a glance

The La Gomera ferries sail from the port of Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera; Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias both run the crossing and each gives it as about 50 minutes. Los Cristianos is a stop on line 40 between Tenerife South Airport and Estación Costa Adeje, and on the night line 711. TITSA names Los Cristianos on those lines but not the ferry terminal, so the walk from your stop to the port is yours to check; the last sailing back, not the last bus, decides the day.

Return advice

The practical part

The essentials

  1. Get to Los Cristianos by bus

From Costa Adeje or the airport, line 40 stops in Los Cristianos; from Santa Cruz, the night line 711 or those line 110 trips TITSA marks as calling at Los Cristianos. Our Los Cristianos port guide and the Los Cristianos destination page carry the boards. From the main Los Cristianos stop the pier is about a 15-minute walk, Fred. Olsen says, so count the walk into the bus you choose.

  2. Book the crossing with the operator

Buy the La Gomera crossing on the operator’s site and work backwards from its rules: Fred. Olsen closes boarding for foot passengers 20 minutes before departure (unless the ticket says otherwise), the bus stop is about 15 minutes’ walk from the pier, and the crossing to San Sebastián takes 50 minutes. A worked morning: a line 40 that reaches Los Cristianos at least 45 minutes before your sailing, the walk, the cutoff, the crossing; the day on La Gomera is what is left between that arrival and the sailing back you chose first. Both operators publish their own seasonal timetables, which this site does not copy.

  3. Plan the island side separately

San Sebastián is the arrival port; La Gomera’s own buses and the national park are outside this site. The tours this site lists include the crossing and the island day with a Tenerife pick-up, which is the simpler plan for one day.

The honest catch

Two timetables, two operators, one walk between them. The ferry does not wait for the bus and the bus does not wait for the ferry. Choose a sailing with a bus comfortably before it, and on the way back take the ferry that leaves a buffer before the last line 40 or the 711 you need.

Santa Cruz is not the La Gomera port

WebTenerife says the Santa Cruz port handles the ferries mainly to Gran Canaria and mainland Spain. For La Gomera, go to Los Cristianos.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask

Can I do La Gomera as a day trip without a car?

Yes, from a south-coast base, in this order: choose the sailing back first; then the morning sailing; then a line 40 (or, from Santa Cruz, a 711 or a 110 that calls at Los Cristianos) arriving at least 45 minutes before it, because the pier is about 15 minutes’ walk from the stop and foot-passenger boarding closes 20 minutes before departure; 50 minutes across; a day in San Sebastián or a booked island tour; the ferry back; and the bus from Los Cristianos with a buffer after it. The boards on this site give the buses by day type; the operator gives the sailings by date.

The other half of the plan

And the way back.

Choose the return sailing first, then the bus that leaves Los Cristianos after it with margin; the last ferry decides the day, and after the last line 40 the night line 711 still runs to Costa Adeje and Santa Cruz.
